Hangzhou
Surfing China Festival 2012
October2-4
Surfing China hosted SDA’s major PRD stop – big waves included.
SDA’s fourth stop was part of the Surfing China Festival in Hangzhou. The festival program included the Vans Dragonsk8 Final and the Qiangtang Surfing Shoot Out, an SUP Demo and other fun program points to keep the crowds busy.
The lineup of riders included all the China top skaters like Li Zhixing, Wang Huifeng, Johniee Tang (Hongkong), Chen Qiwen (Taiwan), Ke Jiaen (Taiwan), Ben Mullinkosson (USA) who all came to check out SDA. Reportedly the exhibition wowed some of the top U.S. and O.Z. pro surfers who popped by to check out the show.
A cool thousand people came to watch all the outdoor activities on the grounds, and the SDA exhibition indoors next to the skatepark was well frequented by hundreds of spectators.
The whole event was covered by CCTV 5 and Qiangjiang TV-watch out for the coverage! Kickerclub’s own Andrew Guan did several short video interviews with Zeng Bingfeng who acted as one of the judges at the skate contest and is a true oldschool Beijing skater.
We had a chance to catch up with Wabsono’s Director of Business Development and VP of the IASC, Glenn Brumage (who goes by Lao Feng in China) to get his take on this year’s Surfing China Festival, the development of SDA and the future of Action Sports in China:
What did you think of this year’s SDA exhibition?
“SDA always stokes me. Skateboarding and Artists have always been in close relationship. SDA has brought out some incredibly creative talent. This year was no exception.”
What are the most important aspects of this action packed weekend?
“Two events always take center stage, the finals of the Vans Dragon Sk8 series and the new Red Bull Qiantang Shootout. That doesn’t mean that the Action Sports village with SDA, Surf/Skate Heritage display and SUP lessons aren’t equally important.”
What impact has the Surfing China Festival on the industry in China?
“I hope we have been able to bring surfing, skateboarding and wakesports to the mainstream through the media coverage already given to the tidal bore. Where there have been ASP surf contests in Hainan and some skate contests across the country, they generated media coverage outside without much impact inside China. As more Chinese people understand what the Action Sports lifestyle is and how it can positively impact your life, the better it will be for the industry that builds Action Sports.”
