Andrew Pommier x Gift skateboards“Totem” Series
Johnnie Tang –
Adee –
Johnny Tang –
Team

Andrew Pommier x Gift Totem Series
The totem idea came from a drawing I did in my sketchbook a few months
back. I like mashing together very different subject matter. The
drawing was fresh in my mind when I started doing the series for Gift.
I sent a few rough examples in and was given the go ahead to make a
full pro series. I had done four sample boards for the Totem series
and just had to add a few more to give each rider a board plus a team
board. I was given a little direction in regards to what boards would
work for which skater, and since I am from Toronto like Johnny Tang I
wanted to give it a little hometown flair, that’s to say I was mostly
left on my own to come up with the final presentation.
I complimented each graphic with loose quick sketches in an around the
main image.
Using a graphics table in Illustrator I traced elements of the main
graphic so was able to duplicate them pretty easily. I really like the
results of the stars on Che Lin’s deck and also the net shapes on
Adee’s deck.
I’ve always liked the traditional way of presenting deck graphics,
which has been to place the image between the truck holes. Originally
it was done in that manner due to the limitations of silk screening.
Now with heat transfers there are no limits but for me it seems right
to get the main graphic centered.
I like bold colors and strong lines. I like that you can tell what the
graphic is in a photo because of how bold it is.
Images for the series are:
Brian Smith – Snake, Horse, Ox – Brian He has a horse Chengyu tattoo on his arm!
Johhnie Tang – Grim Reaper, Ghost Thing (?), Skull
Fu Lingchao – Shark, Eagle, Bear
Che Lin – Snake, 27 Tower (Zhengzhou), Bear
Adee- Mazu Goddess, man, Fish
Johnny Tang – Beaver (Canadian national animal), CN Tower (famous
building in Toronto), Raptor (for the Toronto Raptors Basketball Team)
Team Board – Giggling Shapes
Totem Poles are a very distinct art form that is unique to first
nations tribes along the west coast of Canada and the most northern
part of the Washington State, USA. Generally people see totem poles
as a Canadian thing. They are huge carved structures made from the
massive trees along Canada’s west coast. Totem poles were made by
native people to tell stories about clans and kinship. They also
recount legends or famous stories. An interesting link to Andrew’s
series is that totem poles often blur the boundaries between the human
and animal worlds. It is not uncommon to see people as animals or
vice-versa…I see a huge similarity between Andrew’s designs!
