The Josiah Wuthier Interview

Skatehere: Yo，Josiah，为我们的中国的读者，你能介绍一下你自己吗?

Josiah: 我的名字叫Josiah Wuthier，或者叫啊约，我来自美国科罗拉多州的科罗拉多斯普林斯，我在南宁生活了大约有一年零五个月吧。

Skatehere: For the viewers who don’t know you, can hit us with a brief introduction?

Josiah: My name’s Josiah Wuthier, or 啊约. I’m from Colorado Springs, Colorado in the United States, and I’ve been living here in Nanning for the about a year and 5 months.

Skatehere: 能给我们一些你的滑板背景吗？你是看谁的滑板视频长大的，还有你觉得现在谁滑得比较好？

Josiah: 我从来都不会过多地去关注一些滑板新闻或是别的一些职业滑手，当我刚开始接触滑板的时候，与其看一些滑板公司新发布的东西，我更喜欢上网搜一些来自不同滑手的像世界最牛逼滑板招这样的视频。我就是这样的，而且我还记得当时看Rodney Mullen的视频时，他实在是太强了。慢慢地我长大后，我就开始交其他的一些滑手朋友，也开始经常去当地的滑板场，我学到了不少关于滑板的东西。渐渐地我会看很多Mark Suciu还有Ishod Wair的视频，我很喜欢他们的两个的风格和他们的一些动作。随着中国的滑手越来越多，我最喜欢的中国之一无疑就是小鸡，他看起来很躁也很有趣。

Skatehere: Can you fill us in on your background in skateboarding, who you grew up watching when you first started skating and recently which skater you’ve been most hyped about?

Josiah: I was never very good at keeping up with skateboard news and all the different pros out there. When I first started skating, instead of watching new stuff put out by skate companies, I was more the type of kid that would get on the internet and search for compilation videos of all sorts of different skaters titled “Worlds greatest skateboard tricks” or something like that. I do, however, specifically remember watching Rodney Mullen and thinking he was super sick. As I got older, made some other skater friends, and started going to some of my local skateparks more often, I learned more about what was going on in skateboarding. Recently I’ve been watching a lot of Mark Suciu and Ishod Wair. I like both of their styles and trick selections a ton. As far as Chinese skaters go, one of my favorites is definitely Xiaoji. He’s really gnarly and fun to watch.

Skatehere: 你最开始是怎么来到中国的？是什么原因导致你决定留在这里的？

Josiah: 回想起我第一次来中国是在2013年的十二月，我当时与一个叫Calling All Skaters的队伍在这里呆了个把月，之后就回美国了。回去后，我开始在科罗拉多斯普林斯的一家熟食店当起了厨师，我当时的工作就是烹饪土豆和做一些菜肴，我开始变得很无聊而且不知道到底要做什么。我是信耶稣的，所以我就祈祷并说了一些像“好吧上帝，我很无聊也根本不在乎现在的工作，帮帮我让我知道到底要做些什么吧”之类的话，几天之后，我正在读圣经，其中的一条经文引起了我的注意，我不知道为什么，但是它在当时看起来就是那么得重要。那个礼拜的后来，我就不断地在别的地方听到或是看到这条经文，之后三滑板创办人之一的JP，就是我第一次到中国跟他见面的那个，他给我发了份邮件，邮件里他问我是否有意搬去中国在三滑板工作，在邮件里他引用了那句我经常看到的经文。那句经文是马太福音 9:37里耶稣说的”庄稼多，工人少”，我当时就觉得那是上帝在回应我的祷告并且告诉我在南宁的三滑板会有很多要做的，但是没什么人去做。所以在2014年十二月的时候，我就下定决心搬来中国，住在中国非常有趣，我喜欢这里的人，这里的食物和这里的文化，我希望我能把中文学好并且能在这里住得更久。

Skatehere: How did you initially find yourself coming to China? What has made you stay out here permanently?

Josiah: The first time I came to China was back in December of 2013. I came with a team called Calling All Skaters, stayed for a couple months, and then went back to America. I started working a job as a cook at a deli in Colorado Springs. My duties were cooking potatoes and doing the dishes. I started getting really bored and didn’t know what to do. I believe in Jesus, and so I prayed and said something like “Alright God, I’m super bored and don’t care about this job at all. Please help me to know what to do.” A few days later I was reading the bible and there was one verse that stuck out to me. I didn’t know why, but it just seemed extra important at the time. Later on that week, i kept hearing or seeing that same exact verse in other places as well. Then JP, one of the guys that started San Skateboarding which I met the first time I came to China, sent me an email. In the email he asked me to move to China and work with San Skateboarding. In the email he quoted that same exact verse that I had been showing up everywhere. The verse was Matthew 9:27 (马太福音 9:37) where Jesus said “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few”(“庄稼多，工人少”). I felt like God was answering my prayer and telling me that there was a lot to do in Nanning with San, but not many people to do it. That’s when I made up my mind to move to China in December, 2014. Living in China is super fun. I love the people, food, and culture, and I’m hoping that I can get the language down and live here for a while longer.

Skatehere: 你什么时候开始在三滑板的？你是怎么接触到三滑板的？

Josiah: 我知道三滑板是在2014年二月的时候，当时过几天我就要飞回美国了，JP问我是否愿意当三滑板的滑手，我一下子就变得失落下来，因为三滑板一直都是一家很有趣以及很有创造力的公司，他们像我一样相信上帝，所以非常棒。

Skatehere: How long have you been on San Skateboarding and how’d you initially get on?

Josiah: I got on San back in February, 2014. I was about to fly back to America in a few days, and JP asked me if I wanted to ride for San. I was instantly down. San has always been super fun and creative company, and they believe in Jesus just like me, so it seemed perfect.

Skatehere: 如果我们要到南宁来一场滑板旅行，当地有什么地方可以滑板，吃喝或者party的呢？

Josiah: 民生广场是南宁的一个地方，白天有很多可以滑板的地形，晚上又有一群滑手聚在这里，氛围很好，边上也有很多好玩的地方，每天晚上民生广场就像开party一样热闹。

Skatehere: If someone was to come out to Nanning for a skater trip, what would be the local places to skate, eat and party?

Josiah: Minsheng Guangchang is the place to be here in Nanning. It’s got loads of spots to skate during the day time, and an awesome night life with tons of skaters. There are lots of yummy places to eat near by, and every night is a party at Minsheng.
