Droshky “From The Forest to Shenzhen”
What is your full name (english and chinese), city you are from, and relationship with Droshky?
My name is Niklas Vesely, that means 乐德亮 in Chinese. I am from Ulm, Germany. A small city with one of Germany’s best indoor skateparks. I worked at that skate park since I was 16. I couldn’t imagine getting a real job and my head was all about *skatebording*, so at 19, I founded Droshky.
How have you been involved with China in the past 5 years, either in China or abroad?
When I was at university I was supposed to go on an internship. I was most interested to learn about skateboarding and China. After some online-research I came to the conclusion that BSS Distribution will grow to be China’s most meaningful distribution. I gave Luke a call and just a few months later I was in Shenzhen, we ate Chinese dumplings and dreamed together on how to build the world’s most awesome skateboard company. China quickly developed to be my favorite country. By now I have lived in China for three years and I feel like China is my second home.

What does Droshky mean? Describe how Droshky came about?
I used to walk in skate shops looking for a bright and colorful deck that looked like what I felt when going skateboarding with friends on a sunny day. Skateboarders stand out. They are alive and free. They know the feeling of lying on a warm road after having landed an awesome trick – this feeling of the warm sunshine, the friends cheering, the freedom – this is what I want to express with Droshky!
It seems that the Droshky team is all like-minded in terms of traveling, skating and having fun, how did you choose this team, and what is the push behind traveling everywhere?
Emu, Tobi, AnhJyn, Cyril, and I choose new riders by their characters. We prefer down to earth and open minded skaters who make everyone feel welcome. We want to spread the love for skateboarding, so we look for skaters who sit down on the hot pavement after a good session and share their stories until the night breaks in. The push behind travelling is actually for us to meet as many new friends as possible. Skateboarding bonds skaters together and after one day of skateboarding together we already feel like a family. When we head out for some drinks and a party we really experience the local life – we learn so much about the world! We start saving for the next trip as soon as we get home.
What is your opinion on the skate scene in China? What are some pluses and minuses?
The skate scene in China is very family-like and extremely well paid. On the one hand China is the world’s supplier of skateboards and therefor has a lot of skateboard businesses. On the other hand, the skateboard scene in China is so young that China only has few pro-level skateboarders. This makes Chinese pro-level skateboarders very lucrative. In Europe and USA it’s the opposite: There are only few very profitable skateboard businesses tons and tons of skateboarders. In USA you can see guys feeble-grinding 20 stair handrails but they can’t find a paying sponsor – this isn’t yet the case in China. I guess Chinese skaters are very lucky with their skateboard industry, plus of course the awesome weather, and the world’s best marble skate spots.
Do you guys sponsor Chinese skaters?
We’d love to! But the language barrier makes it hard to have deep conversations about life with Chinese pro-level skaters. Without that conversation its hard for us to find the right skater. But this year we plan to pick up a few Chinese riders, as we want to support the chinese skateboard scene!

If you could see any trick go down in China, what trick and what spot?
A skateboard video on a hot and bright day, Chinese skateboarders push really fast through ancient parts of a city, next to mind blowing temples! Maybe one skater gaps a fish-vendor’s stock on the way. This is what I would love to see go down! Shout out: Who ever sends me (Nik@droshky.eu) the video I just described – I will definitely push and promote it!
Do you make all the decisions when it comes to switching up your deck technology? What motivates you to keep changing it up and finding new innovations?
It’s Luke, David and I together. I want stiffer and lighter decks with higher pop. David wants a cool look and quality. Luke wants skaters to be able to afford the deck. So we sit down together and find a way on how to do it!

How long did the filming take for this video? Any good stories with the team from your time here?
The team only had about two weeks to film, so Emu got up early every morning and woke up the rest of the team. Tobi was the last to get up but the first to land an awesome trick on cam. The team had a really good time living at BSS Distribution and skateboarding with the Chinese locals. This time we focused on making a great video – next time we want to organize skate-events and parties for the local skaters!
What can we expect from Droshky in China in the next 5 years?
You can expect us to throw the biggest and most awesome skateboard parties for Chinese local skaters! - Thanks so much for this nice interview! I will be back in Shenzhen next week. To all Chinese skaters: Whoever wants to go skateboarding together just drop by the Shenzhen BSS Distribution at around 6PM. Mario and I will join in!
