When you think about it, a skateboard contest is quite a strange thing. Skateboarding itself has always been considered an “activity”, a “hobby”, a “lifestyle” a “culture” but not a sport. But as times have changed, there really have been skateboarders who can call themselves, “performance athletes”. Those skaters do train their bodies, appropriate a healthy diet and stay fit, either to film their next video part, or to perform well in the contest. Then there’s other kinds of skaters, the ones who skate for fun, skate to film, and do it well enough to enter contests. So when it comes down to contest time, you have an environment of many different skaters that each follow a completely different methodology towards preparing for a contest. But to the normal audience member who’s just in it to see the extreme sport of guys jumping down stairs, it’s all the same. For a skater, a behind the scenes look gives much more perspective on what happened before, during and after the contest. For this recent Red Bull Hangzhou contest, we interviewed the host Yuan Fei (Vans Team Manager), guest judge Eric Lai (Owner of Vagabond Skateboards), and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners: Xiao Xing (Cons), Chung Chai (Vans) and Adee Lu (DC) to get their perspective on the contest.
Adee
Skatehere:
Skatehere:
Adee:
English Version/英文
Skatehere: How were you feeling before the contest? I heard a few days before the contest you were in the hospital, what happened?
Adee: A couple days before the contest I got food poisoning. Right after I finished eating lunch I started feeling really dizzy, started throwing up and had gnarly diarrhea. Then at night, my throat contracted, my face went numb and I couldn’t even talk, only started drooling. Afterwards, Jeff and Edan came over to my house and helped me get to the emergency room.I got an IV and some antibiotics, and my body started to feel a bit better. But even during the Hangzhou Red Bull contest, I felt like I couldn’t fully control my body. I was feeling really dizzy the whole time, like I had a gnarly hangover…besides that, I was happy to have finished a whole day of competing.
Skatehere: Did you think this year’s contest format was fair to the skaters?
Adee: At first, I wasn’t too sure of how the contest format was going to be. But once I got to the contest and started skating I had some notion of how it was going to be, that we’d be skating all day. The contest format was 1 v 1 bracket style, two people in one group competing to advance to the next group. If both skaters didn’t skate too well head to head, it just depended on their consistency and luck. With regards to the competition format, I respect how the planning committee decided it. Cause the rules of the contest came out a while ago, so you can’t really say if it was fair or not fair, it was the same for all skaters competing.
Skatehere: What was the biggest struggle for you the day of the contest?
Adee: I thought the biggest struggle was my head feeling super dizzy as if I was super hungover. And also forcing myself to finish the competition under the hot sun. It was really hard for me to adjust my feet for a trick after dropping in from the quarterpipe, so I did it all from muscle memory. Most of the tricks I landed I had no reaction to at all…
Skatehere: I saw that you landed a Nollie Hardflip first try, did you already have a line in your mind during the contest or did you just go with the flow?
Adee: Actually during practice I had no control and balance between the board and my feet. When I landed it during the contest, even I was surprised. I didn’t plan out anything during the contest cause my head was way too dizzy to even think about where to go after landing a trick. I just told myself which tricks to bust out during the contest, but even a couple times after I landed a trick I had no idea which obstacle to hit up next.I just let myself enjoy the skateboarding, didn’t give myself any pressure, and plan out anything specific, just did the tricks I should have done. Chilling.
Skatehere: What’s your plan with the prize money?
Adee: Save it. Next month I’mma put the money into my mom’s bank account.
