Yeti In The Bassment
Thomas:

【English Version】
1.First an introduction for us
My name is Thomas Bray aka YETI B, Im Half english half Chinese, currently based in Shanghai. I’m a promoter, DJ, cheeseburger lover, Sambuca hater and run the creative collective Yeti in the Basement.
2.you been doing parties from HK/London to Vancouver,Now Shanghai, why shanghai and why now?
I was based in the U.K and Canada before here and always wanted to head back to Asia. Then a business trip took me to Shanghai and I fell in love with the energy of the city. People here seem much more open to different music, where as in the West, the music circles are already set in stone and the scenes don’t cross over as much. I like the open mindedness of Shanghai’s music scene and how everyone supports each other.
3.A lot of people in China still don’t know what Yeti in the Basement is, could you lighten us up on that?
We’re a creative collective that first started throwing basement parties in the UK around 2010. Since then, we’ve taken our frequencies from clubs to festival stages and warehouses in London, Vancouver, Hong Kong and Shanghai.
We focus on booking forward thinking acts regardless of genre and have worked alongside artists like Young Guru, French Fries, Benji B to brands like adidas Originals and Diesel. Our growing collective consists of DJs, sound engineers, videographers, producers, music journalists and booking agents.
4. when and what makes u start promoting parties?
I think the first party I promoted was wiith my friend Afro Dave’s in Manchester called WET back in 2007. We played nu rave tunes and 20 people came haha. But it all started from just going out alot and being a big fan of music and sub cultures – it just snow balled as the next step.
What qualities do you think a good promoter need?
you need to enjoy late nights and loud music!
5.Before started promoting parties what did you do?
I was was modelling for a few years then spent my savings backpacking around India, Asia and studied Marketing. I then worked for a fashion PR agency while promoting on the side and writing for music publications.
6.Music taste is very important for a promoter, what kinda music do you like and can you give us TOP 5 of your fav artists?
I grew up on listening to hip hop but living in the UK really opened by ears to alot of different sounds from the older dubstep days to hybrid grime and garage sounds by the Night Slugs crew, I really listen to everything! I’m really digging the Soulection label right now as they are putting out some interesting hip hop, R&B hybrids with a bit of Jersey Club thrown in.
If I could only choose 5? That’s soooo hard but for sure J.Dilla, Burial, Madlib and then more recently Mr. Carmack, Kelela…shoutout to my boy FADER ONE too…you’ll see him come up alot next year!
7.Growing up in HK,how do you define the music culture and the scenes of HK?
HK has changed alot since I was growing up there. When we were young, we didnt have many platforms for sub cultures, so we would rely on Napster or Limewire to download virus infected mp3s or buy overpriced imported magazines like The Source and XXL and read the latest album reviews. Nowadays, theres an international artist playing at least once a week, I mean just looking at The Clockenflap Festival line up last month was pretty impressive for HK standard.
8.you are also heavily influnced by street culture and street fashion, what are some of your fav brands?
I LOVE UGLY have some dope designs right now and Palace and Helas are killing it too, I think they are bringing something new to the traditional skate wear game. Sneaker wise, I’ve always been a Vans head since I was a kid as they’re easy to rock!
9.Do you often skate when you were young?how does skating influnced you in your life?
I skated when I was younger and alot of my friends still skate. I always try and involve the skate community in my parties as I want a good mix of people from different creative backgrounds. We did a party with LEFTO a few months back and my homie Brian Kleiber makes some sick skate videos, we got the VJ to mix the footage in live with distorted visuals and it came out looking amazing.
10. Are there any shows popping up and what do you see Yeti In The Basement in 2015?
We’re kicking off 2015 with a big booking! January 16th we have Slow Magic playing a live set at Arkham followed by some other international artists I have to keep secret for now.
Each month we also have our residency at W Hotel Hong Kong, Yeti Sessions at Arcade and #YetiOut at Kulou, where we play everything from Throwback Hip Hop, Jersey Club, Disco and Garage. Over in London, you can catch us on Rader Radio playing twice a month and we’ll be hosting our YETI stage at Noisily Festival and Shorebeach Festival in Croatia this summer too! If you ever want to play with us or simply just boogie, holla at
